Top 10 gluten-free dining picks in the ATL

Fried chicken plate at Chick-a-Biddy
The restaurants on this list are not in any particular order.  Some places I get to more often than others, but I've not had a bad experience at any of them. These are my favorite places and might not suit everyone else's tastes - of course.  The food and drinks listed are items I've personally had which is not every gluten-free item each place offers.  As always, it's the responsibility of each gluten-free patron to choose wisely when eating out.  Bon Appétit!

  1. Rosa Mia - authentic Italian dishes available with gluten-free pasta, desserts
  2. Blue Moon Pizza - gluten-free cheesy bread, pizza, dessert, beer
  3. YEAH! Burger - gourmet burgers w/gluten-free buns, fries, onion rings, beer
  4. Park 75 - gluten-free afternoon tea service, brunch
  5. Chick-a-Biddy. - gluten-free fried chicken (bone-in and fingers), fries, onion rings, beer
  6. Lavender Asian Bistro - extensive Chinese and Thai gluten-free menu options
  7. Jason's Deli - gluten-free sandwiches, salads, dessert
  8. Chipotle - burrito bowl, corn tacos, guacamole
  9. Figo Pasta - gluten-free pasta, risotto, salads, dessert
  10. Tin Roof Kitchen - incredible 100% gluten-free menu (some gluten beer), breakfast, lunch and dinner daily

Food Truck Alley in Alpharetta

Berry cobbler at Tin Roof Kitchen
Food trucks have been popular for a while now, but honestly, I live in the burbs and rarely had a chance to check out the gluten-free options at the moving feast roaming the streets of Atlanta.  So I was super excited to find out that my new neighborhood has a food truck alley on Thursday nights!

At the event we attended, there were three food trucks that had various gluten-free options and a BBQ restaurant tent with many meat options as well.  Below are some gf friendly trucks (far from a comprehensive list) in the ATL.

WOW! (most arepas are gf)
Tex's Tacos (ask for corn tortillas, no gf quesadillas)
The Fry Guy (fab fries, avoid malt vinegar sauce)
King of Pops (bike cart - a few flavors contain gluten)
Happy Belly Curbside Kitchen (killer kale salad!)
To learn more about Alpharetta's Food Truck Alley nights, please check out this website.  The trucks for each week are listed on Monday or Tuesday for that week's event on their FB page.

It was pleasantly cool during our visit to this fun event (due to a rainstorm earlier that evening) so none of us were jazzed about having a frozen pop from the King of Pops. (Plus, we can get their fabulous treats at Whole Foods).  Therefore, we walked a block over to Tin Roof Kitchen and shared desserts including chocolate cake, caramel sea salt panna cotta, apricot pound cake and berry cobbler. I can't think of a more perfect way to end our night at the Food Truck Alley event in Alpharetta!

Christophe's To Go - gluten-free options

Before I started using findmeglutenfree.com for dining options in my area, I searched Urbanspoon and Yelp!  The latter sites are not completely accurate (for gluten-free info) from my perspective, but one listing on one of those sites turned out to be a real gem.  christophe's to go is a prepared food kitchen that has many gluten-free options.  Since I love to cook these days, I haven't tried anything except for dessert. There are three locations in the metro Atlanta area.  To find gluten-free dishes, check the gluten-free box on the left side of the menu page.

These are a few of my favorite things....

If you live in the metro Atlanta area and have to follow a gluten-free diet, there isn't much to complain about.  Obviously, the initial shock of being told you have to stop eating the way you have all your life and learn how to eat gluten-free is daunting.  But these days, it's easier than ever to treat yourself during that trying project - and for long after you've accomplished it as well!

I can't name everything I've found to be insanely delicious in the ATL (that could fill a book!), but here are a few of my absolutely fave finds.

  • Cheese straws from Marilyn's gluten-free.  I get these at Whole Foods and ship them as gifts from the website.  Warning: these are one of the most addictive indulgences I've come across in a long while!
  • Pound cake from Sally's Gluten Free Bakery.  Topping this old fashioned pound cake with fresh strawberries (marinated in sugar and almond extract) and whipped cream will rock your world!
  • Cinnamon scones and cheese biscuits from Gluten-Free Cutie. Both items freeze well so I order them by the dozen, especially for the holidays!
  • NEW! hamburger buns and bread from Pure Knead.  If you like soft white bread and buns that do not need to be heated, toasted or altered in any way, check out this fabulous new bread!  Rolling out to many Kroger stores presently and the new hot dog bun (not available retail currently) is hitting the gluten-free cart at Turner Field soon. *These two new items from Pure Knead are also egg-free, but you'd never know it by the taste!
  • Pizza and Cheesy Bread at Blue Moon Pizza.  I used to try new gluten-free pizza options around town and after being thoroughly unimpressed (or disgusted) with various crusts, I finally stopped.  Like my Grandmother used to say "once you've had the best, why try the rest?"  The pizza at Blue Moon ranks among the best gluten-free options in NYC!
  • Linguini from RP's Pasta.  Several Whole Foods carry some gluten-free products from this incredible line.  I've been known to buy every package at the Whole Foods where I shop because they are often out of stock for weeks on end.  Hand down my favorite fresh gluten-free pasta!

Spring splurge - Afternoon Tea at Park 75!

While it already feels like summer in the ATL, it is in fact, still spring.... One of my favorite spring rituals is enjoying Afternoon Tea.  Park 75 at Atlanta's Four Seasons hotel has been offering gluten-free tea service since I inquired about such an option back in 2007.  Back then they didn't have very good bread (since there were few options available) and they didn't make the gluten-free scones in house.

These days, Chef Robert's team really outdoes themselves in terms of the gluten-free tea menu - it's full of delicious food presented as elegantly as anything else at the restaurant.

My recent visit with a glutenoid friend was as amazing as ever.  The scrumptious scones were served with fresh lemon curd and Devonshire cream as well as a seasonal treat - fresh peach compote!  Each was wonderful alone on the scones or even all layered together on them.

The tea sandwiches are now made with good gluten-free bread and our selections included curry chicken salad, cucumber goat cheese, egg salad (my favorite!) and crab salad served in a mini tortilla shell.

Lastly, the gluten-free desserts were as amazing as ever!  The creme brulee was buttery smooth and not overly sweet.  The almond flour macaron, chocolate covered strawberry, coconut macaroon and house-made caramel candy were all delectable.  But the topping on the gluten-free treats was a tiny lemon tart with fresh strawberries.  Honestly, the tart crust was so good that I was slightly concerned that is was not gluten-free.  Of course, the staff at Park 75 is extremely well trained on food allergy service so the crust was absolutely gluten-free - and SERIOUSLY delicious!

If you want to be pampered while enjoying an absolutely divine gluten-free experience, be sure to check out Afternoon Tea at Park 75 downtown!

If tea isn't your style, check out the amazing brunch at Park 75. Be sure to note your gluten-free needs when making a reservation for tea service, brunch or any other meal.

Mellow Mushroom steps up gluten-free game!

As a previous patron of Mellow Mushroom (over 8 years ago), I was super excited when they introduced a gluten-free pizza crust.  It was unfortunate that I didn't care for the crust at all.  I gave it three tries (as I feel is only fair to do when a new item launches at a restaurant) and each time I could not eat the crust.  And so I didn't go back to Mellow Mushroom again until about a month ago.  Someone told me the company changed their gluten-free crust and it was not only edible, but also good.  We gave it a try and agreed.

All Mellow Mushrooms have the new crust and it's made by a very good company, but it's a custom made crust for MM.  I prefer the original crust from the company to the MM developed crust, but for a quick pizza fix on a weeknight, it's a great option.  I can also get Daura gluten-free beer at our location (beer options vary per store).

It's been a long road for Mellow Mushroom and their gluten-free pizza journey and I'm glad they stuck with it, listened to gluten-free consumers and did right by them.  Hopefully gluten-free diners that gave up on finding good gluten-free pizza at this chain will give them another try like we did.  You might end up being pleasantly surprised!

Find gluten-free dining options in your area

You know you're getting old when you don't get excited about the next new app for this or that.  Technology can be and is often great, of course, but it also seems to be leading many in society into a lifestyle of communicating through devices more than any other way....and that might not be such a good thing.  Only time will tell on that one.

When looking for new places to eat wherever I'm going in the U.S., I've not found any website quite as appealing as findmeglutenfree.com.  Yes, there is an app which I'm sure most users love.  But I love that I can look things up online as well so I can actually read everything which I honestly can't stand to do on my phone.  In most cases, I can't even read that kind of stuff on a phone even with readers and contacts together.

Findmeglutenfree is like any other gluten-free information source so you still have to do your homework.  I haven't been steered wrong by any of my findings (like Tin Roof Kitchen!) on the site to date, and I still have a ton of places to check out.  So much delicious gluten-free food out there and so little time to enjoy it all.  Ah..it's good to live in the ATL these days!

Sprinkles comes to the ATL

Sprinkles is often credited with starting the cupcake craze in NYC several years ago.  They've opened various locations in the U.S. and finally came down South to Atlanta.  I found out about the store opening through Kelly's blog post.

Since we were heading downtown to the Dogwood Festival a while back, we popped into Sprinkles (located at Lenox Square near the front door) for a treat-to-go on the way home.  The place was buzzing with activity and the staff seemed somewhat overwhelmed (and under-trained).  The only gluten-free flavor they currently offer is the red velvet flavor (also offered in a gluten version).  Since I'm used to choosing from maybe six flavors at Gigi's in Norcross (available six days a week!), it was disappointing to have no choice at all at Sprinkles.

After I placed my order for one cupcake to-go, I overheard the person who rang my ticket up ask what my order meant...the order taker explained it was a gluten-free cupcake.  I paid and then waited for someone to bring the already bagged cupcake to the counter.  I looked inside to see a G on top which indicates the item is gluten-free.  I love the fact that there is not a mountain of frosting on the cupcakes at Sprinkles.  I LOVED the cream cheese frosting on the cupcake - it was seriously amazing!  Unfortunately, the cake part was slightly dry and crumbly (though I've had much worse) and had very little flavor to it.  I would not purchase it again unless someone told me they improved the recipe to be much more moist and flavorful.

Since Kelly's post about the cupcake ATM indicated that gluten-free cupcakes were available that way, I checked out the machine outside the store in Atlanta.  At least the day we were there, the one gluten-free cupcake option was not listed on the ATM menu.  Maybe the gluten-free cupcakes are so popular that they ran out of them in the machine...I don't know.  The staff was so busy that I would have had to wait a while to ask them about this so I didn't bother.

It's great that Sprinkles has a gluten-free option and the shop itself is simply darling.  I love the concept of the cupcake ATM and I really wish I could say I loved the gluten-free cupcake, too.  Hopefully, most gluten-free patrons enjoy them as that could lead to the company choosing to offer other gluten-free flavors.

Thankfully, if I'm in the mood for a sweet treat at Lenox in the future, the macaron kiosk just down the mall has amazing options - all of which are gluten-free!

Eight things I've learned about living gluten-free

Just over eight years ago, a severe case of anemia led to my celiac diagnosis.  At the time, I'd never heard of gluten...or celiac disease for that matter.  It seems like a lifetime ago that my world was turned upside down - at least as it's related to eating which is something most of us do at least three times a day.  Here are a few things I've learned in my quest to make sense of this lifestyle.  And yes, it's not just a diet.  To do it right, you have to accept it's a new way of life.

1. It's hard to learn new things as you age and for that reason, the younger someone is when they are told to follow a medically required diet, the better off they'll be.  Learning how to eat completely gluten-free is challenging for anyone and the average person takes six months to a year to really figure it out.

2. There are incredibly delicious gluten-free products available these days compared to just eight years ago.  From battered fried fish to donuts to pizzas to pasta and sub rolls -- and most anything else you can think of.  You might have to taste six barely edible pastas to get to the good stuff, but the good and even insanely delicious stuff is out there.  I don't suggest brands to people these days because my fave items are not necessarily someone else's.  Without question, there are consumers who love items I find totally inedible.  Since I was kind of a food snob to begin with, I don't find that fact particularly odd.

3. Dining out can be delicious!  Once you're set with your alternative, yet delicious, gluten-free groceries you might want to learn how to eat out safely.  You're in luck these days with so many great gluten-free menus being offered compared to just a few years ago.  However, ask the right questions before trusting the staff to feed you safely.  I prefer non-chains as always, but I'm thankful for the chains that do gluten-free right (though I still believe they are few and far between).

4. You are not alone...or at least in the Metro Atlanta area, you don't have to be.  The fact is that having gluten-free friends can help make your life easier.  Think about it.  The more gluten-free people you know, the easier it is make lunch dates or couple dinner dates that you can enjoy to the fullest.  If everyone in your circle continues to choose non-gluten-free friendly places to dine at, you're eventually going to resent them for it.  Talk about the issue sooner rather than later in order to respect your friendship.  As sad as it is to admit, some friends might not be worth keeping around.  for instance, if someone you know thinks you're going overboard by sticking to your diet during the holidays, it might be time to move on.

5. Traveling is challenging for the gluten-free set, but it can be done.  And once you get the hang of it, you might end up having the time of your life!  I've had amazing dining experiences in New York, San Francisco, Dallas, San Antonia, Seattle, Sarasota, Pensacola, Orlando, Charleston, Asheville, Savannah, Chattanooga, British Columbia, Montreal, London and even Paris!

6. We don't have to settle anymore - period.  Every time someone says something like "I guess you're just glad to be able to order pizza again" I literally cringe.  No - actually, I don't care about ordering gluten-free pizza if the crust tastes like a cardboard box.  I also don't eat bread, cookies, crackers, donuts, wraps or anything else that taste like sawdust.  But I do eat delicious versions of all of those things.  In fact, there are times when I don't understand why so many gluten-free brands are out there for our demographic.  Have you ever counted the number of gluten baking mix brands in your normal grocery store?  There are actually only a few of them.  But there are over twenty brands of gluten-free baking mixes sold at specialty grocery stores in the Metro area alone!

7.  The gluten-free diet is not a weight loss plan.  Of course, we all know this, but many people still do not.  They're snapping up gluten-free pizza crusts, bagels, cookies, cupcakes and more - most of which are all higher in fat, calories and sugar than their gluten counterparts.  Most people gain weight when they first start the gluten-free diet - they don't lose it.  And that's good for the underweight group of people that need the extra pounds -- and not so good for the rest of us.

8.  The easier life is, the less meaningful it is.  The big and small challenges in life are what make us stronger.  If everything was easy peasy, life would be pretty boring.  We're supposed to go through things in order to grow - to evolve - to become our best selves.  While being on a restrictive diet might be trivial compared to other challenges one can face in life, consider this.  Many people - probably someone you personally know - won't even get tested for celiac or food allergies because they don't want to give up their favorite foods.  Just the thought of doing this is unimaginable to them.  Doing anything new can be scary or hard or frustrating - or all of the above.  But being gluten-free can turn out to be a blessing if you allow for that possibility.  And I'm so grateful that at some point in the last eight years, I experienced exactly that!

Sally's Bakery round-up!

OK - you know what they say - better late than never, right?  My apologies to the great folks at Sally's Bakery.  This post should have gone up before the new year started.  But my real work keeps getting in the way of doing fun stuff like sharing gluten-free tips here!

We met some family at Callaway Gardens to enjoy the Fantasy in Lights tour back in mid-December.  I knew there would not be any gluten-free bread items on the breakfast buffet as I'd consulted with the manager beforehand.  I happened to mention this to someone at Sally's and they were kind enough to put together a goodie bag for us to pick up on the way out of town.

First up, we enjoyed blueberry muffins and pumpkin bread.  Both were yummy, but the edge goes to the pumpkin bread - always a favorite wintertime treat for us!  After finishing  up breakfast, we did what most people do.  We broke out a Hummingbird Cake and starting carving it up...lol!  Who says you can't have dessert at breakfast?  It was the holidays after all :)

Upon opening the cake container, I knew we were in for an extra special treat. This was evident simply from the aroma of the cake.  It was full of coconut, bananas, nuts and a lot of other great stuff and the frosting was incredible!  It reminded me of something a childhood friend's mother used to make.  It was absolutely one of the best gluten-free cakes I've had to date.  And it was the best Hummingbird Cake, regardless of ingredients, that I've had in years!

Though we did not crack open the gluten-free cookies we found in our goodie bag, they were none-the-less delicious when we finally got into them!

Gluten-free in a pandemic? No problem!

Not to make light of the current situation the world finds itself in, but I'm so thankful that I learned to self isolate when I was diag...
